What is donation processing software?

Most nonprofit organizations collect donations through their websites, and the systems that manage these transactions are generally called ‘donation processing’ software. Most of them consist of a ‘donate’ button that links to a long ecommerce-style payment form. CommitChange’s approach is a little bit different and involves a one-click donation process that’s customizable for things like designated funds, event ticketing, and custom giving experiences that match the organization’s narrative and outcomes. Our approach to donation processing is to combine system consolidation with technology simplification to make it easy for even less-than-techie organizations to deploy compelling donation pages.

Although any system that transacts a donation can be referred to as ‘donation processing’ software, we generally divide these systems into a handful of categories: donation forms, campaign pages, event ticketing, and mobile payments. Each of these systems achieve the same outcome (transacting a donation), but they have different layouts and user experience design to optimize for their objectives.

Can you process donations from all credit cards?

Yes, we can process donations from any credit card. It doesn’t especially matter if it’s Visa, Mastercard, Discover, etc. We even process American Express (AMEX) transactions, though they charge us 2.9% + $.30 rather than the discounted rate. We are also able to process almost all international credit cards, which means you can easily raise money from international supporters using CommitChange.

How are donation buttons and forms installed?

Setting up a donation form takes a little less than 5 minutes; it requires selecting options in our donation form builder, copying the widget’s code, and then pasting that code into your website where you want the button or form to appear. You can do this yourself, send instructions to your webmaster, or we’ll do it for you if you provide us with a website login!

CommitChange supports a wide variety of donation buttons and forms, ranging from generic transactions to highly customized giving campaigns with multiple designations. If you’re not sure what to build, contact our team and we’ll provide you with examples that we’ve seen succeed and help you set it up.

What is the history of nonprofit donation forms?

Most donation processes are based on the ecommerce forms from the early 21st century -- imagine Paypal or Amazon checkout. These forms were essentially copied and pasted into the nonprofit world as a means of collecting donations easily. The problem that we identified is that there’s a big difference, from a user-experience perspective, between purchasing an item on an ecommerce website versus donating to a meaningful cause, and that wasn’t reflected in either the design or technology. We ended up focusing on building a donor-centric giving experience from the ground up, and that technology was the cornerstone of the entire CommitChange fundraising platform.
